What does virtual running coaching include?

A training plan, gait cues and ongoing support from Storm Wilson, delivered remotely so you run your own routes. MOTiV lists it on Google as: Remote running coaching with training plans, gait cues, and ongoing support.

"I think just being happy and proud of yourself that you're putting in the work and not feeling like you need to do something every single day is pretty powerful."

Storm Wilson, founder of MOTiV

The three parts

  • Training plan: the runs, and where they fall in your week, pointed at a goal race.
  • Gait cues: short form changes to work on, from a coach who is also a Level 2 Certified Running Gait Analyst.
  • Ongoing support: someone to adjust the plan with when life, weather or a niggle gets in the way.

Log each workout, rate your effort and leave notes in the app so Storm can follow your training. Programming provides a monthly check-in and monthly changes; Coaching includes check-ins, adjustments and unlimited messaging. For weekly proactive review and two movement video analyses each week, choose Performance+.

Who is coaching you

Storm is a Certified Endurance Running Coach who has run a 2:52 marathon, and a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, so the person writing your plan can also tell a training problem from an injury.

That helps most when an old injury tends to return at the same point in every training block, because the plan can be written with that history in mind from the first week. Running coaching sits with the rest of MOTiV's coaching and performance training.

How does gait analysis fit into running coaching?

Gait cues are part of the coaching. A full running gait analysis is a separate 75-minute session in Chattanooga that goes deeper, for $190.

The gait analysis at MOTiV is a biomechanical running assessment with video analysis and a corrective plan. Done before or early in a coaching block, it gives the training plan a starting point: which changes to work on, and which odd-looking parts of your stride to leave alone.

Performance+ includes two video movement analyses per week for remote clients. The in-person gait analysis also includes strength and mobility testing.

Can I get a running plan while recovering from an injury?

Sometimes. If the injury still needs treatment, get it assessed first; a training plan can then be built around what the clinician finds.

Near Chattanooga, start with a physical therapy evaluation for running injuries at $150. Storm can then treat the injury and plan the return to running in the same place.

Farther away, see a clinician near you and share what they find with Storm. Remote coaching is not a substitute for a hands-on exam.

How much pain is acceptable on a run during rehab, and what to do when it is worse the next morning, are questions for whoever is treating you. Get those rules in writing before you add mileage, so the plan and the rehab do not pull in different directions.

Before you book

What do runners ask before signing up?

How much does an online running coach cost?

At MOTiV, the coaching app is $49, $129 or $269 a month for the Programming, Coaching and Performance+ tiers. These are the virtual running coaching options; choose by the support you need.

Do I need a gait analysis first?

No. You can start coaching without one. A gait analysis is worth adding if the same pain keeps coming back or you want to change your form, and at MOTiV it is a 75-minute session for $190 in Chattanooga.

What distances do you coach?

Storm is a certified endurance running coach whose own racing includes a 2:52 marathon. Tell Storm your goal race and date when you apply, and you will hear whether it is a fit.

Can an online running coach help if I keep getting hurt?

A coach can change your training load, but pain that keeps coming back needs an assessment first. Near Chattanooga that means a physical therapy evaluation or a $190 gait analysis at MOTiV; farther away, a clinician near you, whose findings the plan then builds on.
